ORNAMENTAL GATES
(Fun with fonts)

PI VERSION: 8.

LEVEL: Beginner (with basic knowledge of tools).

MAIN TOOLS USED: Text Tool, Transform Tools, Retouch Tools/Blur, Object Paint Eraser, EasyPalette (for presets).

NOTE: This tutorial uses the 'Eras Light ITC' font as well as some usually installed with Windows. If you do not have this font installed on your computer, Click Here to download a path shape to use instead. Instructions are included for using either the font or shape.

INSTRUCTIONS

LOWER PART OF GATES

1. Open a new white canvas, 450W x 300H pixels.

2. Using the Text Tool, Font - Times New Roman: Size - 128: Mode - 3D Round: type a Capital I.

3. Use the Transform Tools/Resize to make it 20W x 160H pixels and fill with a metallic preset of your choice (see Opposite). The Border & Depth settings will depend largely on the preset you use but try to get a rounded look to your bars.

4. Right Click/Duplicate this 8 times.

5. Line up the 9 bars and then Right Click/Align/Top.

Right Click/Align/Space Evenly/Horizontally (make sure that 'Even (fix objects on both ends)' is checked) and OK.

6. Right Click/Merge As Single Object.

 

7. Using the Arial font, type a large capital I (3D Round - same preset) and use the Transform Tools/Resize to make this the width of your bars (should be approximately 175W) x 6H pixels.

8. Right Click/Duplicate this and put the two horizontal bars in place at the top and bottom of the vertical bars as shown.

 

 

9. Duplicate one of the horizontal bars once more, then use the Transform Tools/Rotate & flip, to rotate this bar through 90 degrees right or left.

 

Put in place at the left hand side of the gate.

 

10. Right Click/Duplicate this upright bar and use the Transform Tools/Resize to make the bar 10W x 240H pixels, then put in place on the right-hand side of the gate.

UPPER PART OF GATES

11. Using the Eras Light ITC font, type a large capital S (same mode and preset).

If you do not have this font, open & use the S shape you have downloaded from the link at the top of this tutorial now - make this mode - 3D Round and fill with the same preset as the rest of your gate.

12. Use the Transform Tools/Resize to make the S 45W x 200H pixels, then use the Transform Tools/Rotate by degree to rotate the S 65 degrees to the right. Put in place as shown.

13. Right Click/Select All Objects - then Right Click/Merge As Single Object.

 

14. Now, using the Symbol font, type a lower case W - size 128 (same mode & preset).

15. Right Click/Duplicate this 3 times and arrange as shown.

16. Select the top left of these four shapes and Right Click/Convert Object Type/From Text/Path to Image.

17. Use the Object Paint Eraser to erase the top part of this shape as shown opposite.

 

18. Select all four shapes and Right Click/Merge As Single Object.

 

 

19. Move the combined shape to the gate and Right Click/Arrange/Send to Back.

 

 

 

20. Use the Transform Tools/Resize to make the shape approximately 116W x 100H pixels.

 

21. Use the Object Paint Eraser to erase any excess shape from the gate as shown.

 

22. Right Click/Select All Objects. Right Click/Merge As Single Object.

 

 

 

23. Use the Retouch Tools/Blur to blend the top curve of the gate into the right-hand upright bar as shown.

 

 

24. Right Click/Duplicate the left-hand side of the gate.

25. Use the Transform Tools/Rotate & flip to flip the object Horizontally and put in place. Select both gates and use Right Click/Align/Bottom to ensure perfect alignment but leave a slight gap between the gates to show the latch well in the next section.

HANDLE & LATCH

26. Using the Arial font, size 40, (same mode & preset), type a small o.

27. Using Arial again, size 30 this time, type a small i. Use the Transform Tools/Resize to shorten it.

28. Put the two letters together to form the handle for the gate (see illustration), select them both and Right Click/Merge As Single Object. Put in place on the gate.

29. Now type a small _ (underscore) and use the Transform Tools/Resize to make this approximately 25W x 6H pixels. Right Click/Arrange/Send to Back and put in place as the latch.

30. Right Click/Select All Objects. Right Click/Merge As Single Object. Add a shadow if required.
