Epitaph For Jeffrey
...she smiled and took you in as you touched her flowing skin....

Jeffrey when you saw your own sweet lady,
lying in the arms of someone new,
you woke them with your cries, there was fire behind your eyes
and you hardly even saw the man you slew.
They hunted you, they chased you to the cliff top
until there were no places left for you to hide...
And you saw them coming on with a rope to hang you from,
so you turned and gave your body to the tide...

CHORUS:
Never trust the sea - the sea's a woman
And not the kind to make a man a wife...
She will rock you like a mother.... she will mock you as a lover....
She will ask you for your heart and take your life....

As you fell you asked the sea to be your mistress
and take your body gently to her bed...
And she smiled and took you in as you touched her flowing skin
and you thought your life was saved - but you were dead...
For the sea that cast your body to the shoreline
was giving back a lover of her own
And as you crawled upon the beach, out of the water's reach,
the spirit of the water wept to find herself alone...

CHORUS:
Never trust the sea - the sea's a woman
And not the kind to make a man a wife...
She will rock you like a mother.... she will mock you as a lover....
She will ask you for your heart and take your life....

The soldiers took you as you climbed the hillside
and brought you for your trial to the town.
For your young and foolish wife you must pay them with your life...
but your bravery had won you some renown.
So they said they'd grant your freedom if the sea once more was kind
and they watched you from the cliff top as you fell....
But the sea looked up in joy to see her lover back again
and now you sleep with her forever 'neath the swell..........

CHORUS:
Never trust the sea - the sea's a woman
She is not the kind to make a man a wife...
She will rock you like a mother.... she will mock you as a lover....
She will ask you for your heart and take your life....
Jeffrey all she wanted was - your life.
