Eagle Over Blue Mountain

.....like the eagle over blue mountain, I know the wind will carry me home....

I brought you a piece of glass, a simple thing to please your eye...
On it traced a bird in flight with crystal wings against the sky.
You took it into both your hands. You said of all that you possessed,
this little thing I'd brought so far was, without doubt, the loveliest.
You held it up in front of you. You turned it slowly in the light....
and lost yourself in patterns on its snowy painted mountainside......

CHORUS:
Like the waters of an everlasting fountain
my days go by but I'm not counting...
Like the eagle over blue mountain
I know the wind will carry me home....

I remember seagull cries as ropes were loosened on a quay,
the gentle swell of morning tide as dawn came up upon the sea...
Eyes that strained for signs of land out beyond the timeless blue....
Knowing that there lay a road that led to journey's end and you....
I thought about the endless miles, I longed for sleep - it wouldn't come.
It's taken me a while to know you're with me - though I seem alone...

CHORUS:
Like the waters of an everlasting fountain
my days go by but I'm not counting...
Like the eagle over blue mountain
I know the wind will carry me home....

Trees in shades of amber swayed like living fire against the sky.
Branches bowed their heads and prayed as Autumn sang their lullaby.
We drove between the misty hills in their last show of the dying year...
With new life burning in my soul, I sang for all the world to hear...
And when the day is long and I am weary and can go no more
I think about the peace I found that night, as I stood at your door....

CHORUS:
And like the waters of an everlasting fountain
my days go by but I'm not counting...
Like the eagle over blue mountain
I know the wind will carry me home....
Like the waters of an everlasting fountain
my love flows on and I'm not doubting...
Like the eagle over blue mountain
I know the wind will carry me home....

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG

the 'piece of glass' that started it all..........

In late 1977 I did a tour of Scotland and, whilst doing a bit of sight-seeing, I bought a paperweight from a souvenir shop at the end of Loch Ness. It was made by Caithness Glass and featured an engraved eagle on the outside and a blue, snow covered mountain inside (see picture above). The paperweight was a gift for a special friend but I also bought one for myself, which I still have. I bought the paperweights at the beginning of the tour and it became a major job ensuring that they didn't get broken during the journey - which included a sea voyage over to the Isle of Lewis and back, to play the folk club there.

The purchase of this paperweight led to the song, which later became the title track of the album, which later led to the 'Eagle Over Blue Mountain' tour with The Rosie Hardman Band. It was also the cause of my association with Raptor Rescue who owned Wally and Pegasus (see Story) who accompanied us on tour and flew over the heads of very surprised audiences to land on my arm (also see Autobiography) - an event that led to much joy but also my understanding of the phrase 'Never work with children and animals'........ especially eagles with a penchant for beer....
